In above ground construction broad social values play an increasing conditional role, while this role is often still limited in underground construction.
As part of the project ‘4D bouwenvelop’, commissioned by the Center for Underground Building in Delft (COB), the broader value of underground space has been researched based on the '6-capitals' model.
The '6-capitals' model is a widely used model in which long-term value is divided into financial, productive, intellectual, human, social and natural value. In this study, these values are applied to the underground space: what is the meaning in this context and how can it be applied into urban developments?
The results of the research are visualised in a set of drawings which are used to determine the ambition for long term value creation in the underground within any urban context. The drawings are presented in a series of workshops which will be held in 2023 with the urban planning departments at several municipalities in the Netherlands.
