el KANTOOR is one of 5 designers selected to participate in an international collaboration, in which co-creation is key. We enganged in an open design process with the residents of Kampung Kunir to create solutions for sustainable public spaces in Jakarta.
Bursting with 16,000 residents per square kilometer, Jakarta stands out as one of the world's densest cities – as a consequence of rapid urbanization. However, this remarkable population surge has not been met with equivalent support from its infrastructure, evident in sparse green and public spaces, barely reaching 5% of the city's land area, far below the 30% target set by Law Number 26 of 2007. This lack of breathing room, compounded by other factors, has plunged Jakarta into an environmentally vulnerable state, plagued by heatwaves, floods, and dangerous levels of air pollution, giving rise to escalating social problems.
Answering this challenge, Erasmus Huis Jakarta, Dutch Design Foundation, and Playo have launched What If Lab: Sustainable Public Spaces, an intercultural program that brings together multidisciplinary designers from Indonesia and the Netherlands to co-create public spaces with the community in Kampung Susun Kunir. Beyond tackling environmental and social hurdles, What If Lab empowers locals to reimagine and revitalize their existing public spaces, forging a path toward a more sustainable future. As this program nears it's end, the team of designers will remain active under a new name, Kampung Kollektief.
