WIGWAM · BEIJING

Located in Lido, a neighbourhood in Beijing with several cultural activities, WIGWAM expects to be the new music HUB for international DJ´S. To fit within the cultural demand of the area the initial spatial approach aimed to fit functions, such as, movie screening, dining, drinking, listening to music and dancing.

With that in mind, KANTOOR worked on a flexible layout; where light was the main design element. By bringing a bright scenario in the daytime with the natural light and in the night where the self-expression of the space lights, as a Glowing Box. For this, LED strips mark most of the furniture and a large LED screen runs across the DJ booth creating not only a sound interaction, but also a visual experience with the music played.

The DJ booths is an enclosed space represented in a Jukebox, where wood is used in a larger scale to contrast the other materials used, which were mainly Terrazzo, Concrete walls and Black epoxy floor. In a higher level a small chill out room is connected through a rounded opening integrating it with the rest of the space.

As a result of different variables an additional bar was at the last moment added to increase the service capacity, leading to a mismatch with the scale, functionality and circulation on how the space was initially designed. However, the flexibility of the layout has allowed last minute changes and the possibility for the space to work well with a lower capacity offering a more intimate experience with the space.
